Light of the mind

Sunday, November 03, 2013

Nearly a decade ago, Edwin Morgan wrote a poem called For the Opening of the Scottish Parliament, 9 October 2004

It's packed with pithy, eminently quotable phrases, and some cracking collective nouns: "A nest of fearties." "A symposium of procrastinators." "A phalanx of forelock-tuggers."

But it's the opening line that slaps you in the face so hard that you want to print it out and stick it on your wall:

Open the doors! Light of the day, shine in; light of the mind, shine out!

I actually did print it out and stick it on my wall.

You can read the poem in full here, courtesy of the Scottish Poetry Library. I can't think of a better thing to do on a Sunday morning.

  2. Oh I love this. Wish I'd read it then. It would be stuck in my office. Now it has five weeks to be stuck there. Maybe when we move, it could be super appropriate.
